With reference to Foreign Office Printed

Letter No.7

6745/130/10 of the 23rd September

requesting observations on telegram No.2 of the

19th September from the Commercial Secretary

at Hong Kong relative to gas masks for Canton,

the Department of overseas Trade enclose a copy

of a telegram No.11 of the 7th September from that

officer. The telegram says that the Mayor of

Canton wanted to purchase a million masks in an

ordinary commercial manner for the civilisn

population presumably of Canton. The enquiry was

accordingly passed to Messrs. Matheson & Co. Ltd.,

3 Lombard Street, London, E.C.3. on the 9th

September, who were given the necessary particulars

in the form of a mesa andum.

2. The question of the delivery of munitions of

war through Burma has been raised separately in

memorandum No.25515/35/34 of the 17th September

from the Department of Overseas Trade to the

Foreign Office.
